The latest annual American Time Use Survey (ATUS), covering calendar year 2021, shows a notable scaling back from the previous year’s big increase in the percentage of survey respondents who reported working at home, confirming that at least some workers are returning to their physical job locations. The ATUS is a survey report released annually by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) that tabulates the various activities Americans engage in during any given day, including work and whether it is performed at home. As discussed in more detail below, the 2021 survey shows a notable percentage drop both in time spent by workers working at home and in the number of hours worked at home.
