According to the most recent annual national Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) conducted by the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the total number of homicides in U.S. workplaces increased dramatically in 2016 – the most recent year reported – to 500 recorded deaths compared to 417 in 2015.

Moreover, the number of workplace suicides recorded also increased significantly, from 229 in 2015 to 291 in 2016, reaching an all-time high record since BLS began tabulating these data in 1992. Together, homicides and suicides accounted for 15.2% of all workplace fatalities in 2016, the highest percentage since 2012.

NT Lakis staff has prepared a chart detailing homicides and suicides as a percentage of total annual workplace fatalities over the past twenty years. A copy of the BLS national Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries for 2016 is available online here.
