According to the latest findings from the annual National Survey of Drug Use and Health (Survey), which has been conducted yearly by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) since 1971, use of illicit drugs (including marijuana, which remains an illicit drug under federal law) continued its pattern of increase among full-time employed (FTE) U.S. workers in 2019, the most recent year surveyed. In fact, the percentage of FTEs using illicit drugs has gone up every year since 2011.

In contrast, alcohol abuse among both binge and heavy drinkers declined slightly among U.S. FTEs in 2019. Alcohol abuse peaked within the FTE demographic in 2015 and subsequently has either declined slightly or held steady during the following four years.
