California has long been at the forefront among the states in enacting laws that extend workplace rights to employees, in many cases well beyond the protections contained in the federal employment laws. The recently adjourned 2016 session of the California legislature was no exception.
Among the new measures approved by the legislature and signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown were a further expansion of the state’s already expansive Fair Pay Act, as well as a measure that would strictly limit employers from imposing choice of law and forum selection restrictions on California employees in order to evade state law.
These and several other employment-related bills approved by the legislature this year are briefly summarized in this memorandum.
