Sweeping new privacy rules went into effect in the European Union (EU) last year designed to strengthen the protection of personal information – including human resources (HR) and personnel data – of individuals living in the EU.
Among other things, the new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) places strict restrictions on the collection, use, storage, and transfer of a broad range of personally identifiable information from the EU to other countries, including the United States.
The issue of protecting personal data also is getting increased attention in the U.S., inspired in part by the GDPR, but also by a number of high profile data breaches that have occurred here in the last few years as well as by alleged data abuses by companies that collect personal data.
