Recently published results from the 2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (the latest data available) show that the percentage of full-time employed (FTE) U.S. workers reporting illicit drug use or marijuana use increased during 2014 to the highest percentage in the last ten years, to 10.6%, surpassing the previous ten-year high of 9.1% recorded in 2013. “Marijuana only” use jumped from 7.5% the previous year to 8.7% – also a ten-year high – and was up from 6.2% just five years ago.
By contrast, the percentage of FTEs acknowledging alcohol abuse remained relatively consistent with previous years.
The annual national survey on Drug Use and Health is conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) – an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – and is based on data gathered from sample populations covering all fifty states and the District of Columbia.
