The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) recently published for public comment its draft “strategic plan” (the Plan) for Fiscal Years 2018-2022. The draft plan, which is required under the federal Government Performance and Results Modernization Act, is designed to lay out the Secretary of Labor’s priorities and provide a description of how DOL’s component agencies will achieve the Plan’s stated goals and objectives. As with past strategic plans, however, the document is light on details, and simply discusses in broad strokes how the agency under the Trump Administration intends to approach the various mandates under DOL’s umbrella.
The cornerstone of the new draft Plan is better coordination between DOL’s various agencies to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the programs these agencies already administer and enforce. The Plan envisions using evidence-based policy and decisionmaking and data-driven strategies to better support the American workforce, assist employers with compliance, and target enforcement where necessary.
