President Biden has nominated Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to fill the U.S. Supreme Court vacancy that will be created upon the retirement of long-time Justice Stephen G. Breyer. Judge Jackson currently serves as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, and if confirmed by the U.S. Senate will be the first African American woman and the first former public defender to sit on the nation’s High Court.
Given her liberal credentials, Judge Jackson is likely to be opposed by many Senate Republicans when the vote to approve her nomination occurs. That said, barring any unexpected issues that come up during her Senate confirmation hearings that could impact her chances, our expectation is that she will be easily confirmed. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has indicated that he would like the vote to occur in early April.
