The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the component agency within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that administers the nation’s lawful immigration system, issued two reports recently containing a variety of immigration-related statistics that should be of interest to employers.
Together, the two documents – the agency’s Fiscal Year 2018 Statistical Annual Report and an accompanying report on updated H-1B approval and requests for evidence data through the second quarter of FY 2019 – provide statistical information on the most popular and widely-used benefits and programs administered by USCIS over the last five fiscal years, from FY 2014 to FY 2018.
The data contained in these documents appear to further confirm that the additional scrutiny by the Trump Administration on alleged abuse of the U.S. immigration system, and in particular on the misuse of so-called H-1B visas, is making it harder for employers to reliably count on approval of employment related work authorization applications to employ foreign nationals.
