U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the agency within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that administers the Form I-9 employment eligibility verification process, has issued an updated “M-274” Handbook for Employers.
The I-9, which must be used to verify employment eligibility of all new hires, can present a compliance minefield for employers. The M-274 employer handbook is designed to provide step-by-step guidance to navigating the Form I-9 compliance process.
The updated handbook reflects recent substantive changes to the Form I-9, including a new fillable PDF format, new data fields, and revised instructions that were finalized by USCIS in 2016.
