U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the agency within the Department of Homeland Security responsible for administering the employment eligibility verification process, has issued a new version of the Form I-9.

A new version of the I-9 containing “smart features” intended to help employers complete the form electronically was approved by the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) earlier this fall. USCIS, which administers the I-9, has now made the new form available. Under OMB’s terms of clearance, employers will be required to begin using the new I-9 no later than January 22, 2017. Employers can continue to use the outgoing I-9 (identified as “03/08/2013 N”) until January 21, 2017.

The new I-9, identified as “11/14/2016 N,” is available to download from the USCIS website.
