California’s legislative session formally ended on October 15, and Governor Jerry Brown has signed or vetoed almost 1,000 bills, several of which will directly impact employers operating in the state.

Among other bills, Governor Brown signed legislation banning employers from asking job applicants about salary and criminal background history. He also signed legislation which will place immigration-related restrictions on employers and expand the scope of the state’s mandatory sexual harassment training. All of these new laws will go into effect on January 1, 2018.

At the same time, Governor Brown vetoed highly controversial legislation that would have required employers to report to the state gender pay gap data. He also vetoed a bill to expand the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) to specifically protect employees from adverse action based on their reproductive health decisions.
