With the government scheduled to run out of funding on December 20, Congress approved a short-term stopgap measure to keep the doors open through March 28, 2025.
This year, Congress again failed to pass an annual appropriations bill to fund the federal government before the new fiscal began October 1. Instead, lawmakers enacted a three-month Continuing Resolution that kept government spending at current levels through December 20, 2024. As that deadline neared, there was uncertainty about whether a new short-term spending deal could be made without a partial government shutdown. Ultimately, Congress enacted a Continuing Resolution (H.R. 10545) that funds government operations through March 28, 2025, at the same funding levels that were in effect for 2024.
The Continuing Resolution means that the newly elected Congress and President-Elect Trump’s incoming administration will have to work out a spending deal for the rest of FY 2025, even as they begin the appropriations process for FY 2026.
