By a straight party-line vote of 53 to 44 on September 26, 2019, the Republican-controlled United States Senate confirmed President Trump’s nomination of Eugene Scalia to be the next Secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Mr. Scalia, who has been practicing law in Washington D.C., was subsequently sworn into office by Vice President Mike Pence in a White House ceremony held on September 30.
Secretary Scalia takes over from Deputy Secretary of Labor Patrick Pizzella, who has been serving as Acting Secretary since the resignation of former Secretary Alexander Acosta in July. Mr. Pizzella is expected to return to his duties as Deputy Secretary.
Secretary Scalia assumes leadership over a Labor Department that has been actively pursuing and implementing the Trump Administration’s DOL regulatory agenda. He is expected to continue to aggressively implement that agenda.
