The House of Representatives has passed and sent to the Senate for its consideration a bill that would amend the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) to allow private-sector employers to offer employees the option of choosing compensatory time off with pay in lieu of overtime pay.

H.R. 1180, the Working Families Flexibility Act, was approved on May 2, 2017, on a near party-line vote of 229-197, with Republicans in favor and Democrats opposed.  Proponents argue that the bill will increase workplace flexibility arrangements to the benefit of employees seeking greater work/life balance.  Opponents argue that it will erode workers’ right to overtime pay.
