NT Lakis lawyers have filed written comments with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) on the agency’s proposal to revise its “Enforcement Guidance on National Origin Discrimination” under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII) and other EEO laws. Published for public comment on June 2, 2016, the proposed revisions would replace the EEOC’s existing “Compliance Manual” chapter on “National Origin Discrimination,” which was last updated in 2002.
While our comments commend the EEOC both for clarifying a number of practical compliance issues involving national origin discrimination and for giving interested parties a chance to comment on the proposed changes, we also urge the EEOC to scale back on several other proposed changes that purport to expand the scope of Title VII beyond its intended coverage.
