A Senate committee has approved by voice vote and sent to the Senate floor for further consideration a bill that would prohibit federal contractors from asking about or considering applicant criminal history information until the latest stages of the hiring process.

S.842, the Fair Chance to Compete for Jobs Act of 2017, was approved by the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs (HSGA) Committee on May 17, 2017. The bill is essentially the same as a bill approved unanimously by the same committee in late 2015, but which never received full Senate consideration. A companion bill (H.R. 1905) has been introduced in the House of Representatives.
