The U.S. Senate on April 27, 2023, rejected the latest attempt to ratify the 50-year old Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to the U.S. Constitution. In a relatively close vote, the Senate rejected a resolution declaring that the ERA should be added to the Constitution because three-quarters of the states had approved it since it was introduced in 1972. The impact of ERA ratification would have been relatively limited because of changes in the law that have occurred since the proposed amendment was introduced.
